Our Story
The Greater Mankato Diversity Council (GMDC) is dedicated to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and connected community through diversity education and action. We aim to raise awareness, build connections, and drive progress to strengthen the Greater Mankato area.
Through Promoting Respect Workshops, Business and Organizational Diversity Training, and community events, we provide tools to understand diversity, promote inclusion, and celebrate differences. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, GMDC serves as a resource for all, focusing on respect and full participation for everyone.
Our Founder: Ed Waltman
In 2004, Ed Waltman, then Superintendent of Mankato Area Public Schools, founded GMDC to address the growing diversity in Southern Minnesota. Waltman brought together leaders from education, business, government, and community organizations to proactively build understanding and unity.
Supported by over 25 corporate sponsors, GMDC launched with Prejudice Reduction Workshops for schools and a Perspectives Business Curriculum to address workplace diversity. Today, we continue to grow as a trusted resource for inclusivity and respect in the Greater Mankato area.
